Bangkok: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has termed his official visit to Thailand as "historic", marking a significant milestone in Nepal–Thailand diplomatic relations. Speaking at the Embassy of Nepal in Bangkok, PM Oli said the visit — his first official trip to Thailand — coincided with the successful conclusion of the Sixth BIMSTEC Summit, making it especially noteworthy.

"This visit is historic, as it is the first official visit by a Nepali Prime Minister to Thailand in the 66 years of our diplomatic ties," PM Oli noted, while also extending a formal invitation to his Thai counterpart, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, to visit Nepal.

During the visit, Nepal and Thailand signed six Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) — two at the government level and four through non-governmental agreements. These agreements aim to strengthen cooperation in trade, aviation, tourism, culture, and development, reflecting a growing momentum in bilateral engagement.

While visiting the embassy, PM Oli expressed satisfaction over Nepal having its own embassy building in Bangkok and highlighted the need for further infrastructure development. Nepal’s Ambassador to Thailand, Dhan Bahadur Oli, echoed this sentiment and proposed the construction of a new office building and the acquisition of additional land.

The Prime Minister was accompanied by First Lady Radhika Shakya, Foreign Minister Dr Arzu Rana Deuba, Chief Adviser Bishnu Prasad Rimal, Economic and Development Adviser Dr Yubaraj Khatiwada, Chief Secretary Ek Narayan Aryal, and Foreign Secretary Amrit Bahadur Rai, among others. The embassy later hosted a dinner reception in honor of the Prime Minister, attended by members of the delegation and the Nepali community in Thailand.

The Sixth BIMSTEC Summit, which concluded on Friday, adopted a six-point proposal including the Bangkok Vision. The vision emphasizes regional trade expansion, communication infrastructure, and human security as core areas for cooperation among member nations.

PM Oli's visit is seen as a diplomatic breakthrough and a step forward in Nepal’s active engagement in regional cooperation under the BIMSTEC framework.
